Spaghetti and Meatballs
Spaghetti and meatballs is a favorite dinner for our family!
Spaghetti is such a delicious pasta, especially when finished with tomato sauce. By adding meatballs to the dish, it's a great protein source and goes perfectly with spaghetti.
Ingredients
- 1 package of Spaghetti
- 1 package (approximately 1 pound) of Ground Bison (or Beef)
- 1 teaspoon of Sea Salt
- 0.5 teaspoons of Black Pepper
- Tomato Sauce (recommendation: Rao's Marinara Sauce)
- Optional toppings: basil, parmesan cheese (dairy!)
Directions
Spaghetti:
- Fill a large pot about halfway up with water, put on the stove on the strongest burner.
- Heat the water on high until the water boils.
- Add the dry spaghetti to the boiling water and stir immediately (with a wooden spoon) to break up the dry spaghetti.
- Cook the spaghetti per the package directions (usually for 11-12 minutes).
- When the spaghetti is ready, turn on the cold water in your sink and pour the spaghetti and boiling water into a colander.
- Add some tomato sauce (1 to 1.5 cups) to the large pot and add the spaghetti in; mix thoroughly and reduce the heat to the lowest setting to warm the sauce with the spaghetti.
Meatballs:
- Form the ground meat into balls that are slightly smaller than a golf ball and add to a large pan or large cast-iron pan.
- Heat the pan on medium heat to cook the meatballs.
- Once the sides of the meatballs start to turn color, use a large spoon to flip all of the meatballs.
- Wait a few minutes for this side of the meatballs to brown and then mix all the meatballs with another large spoon; season with the salt and pepper.
- Mix up the meatballs every few minutes until they develop a brown color and looks cooked all the way through (break up a meatball in half to check).
- If cooking the meatballs in tomato sauce, use a small pot and add tomato sauce and meatballs to the pot; heat on medium until the tomato sauce is boiling (as this should ensure the meatballs are thoroughly cooked).
- Serve the spaghetti on a large plate and top with meatballs; optionally, add freshly chopped basil or parmesan cheese to the top of the dish. Enjoy!
Tips
- The tomato sauce can be heated in the small pot ahead of time to save time when cooking everything.
- Make sure to stir the spaghetti multiple times while it is cooking so the spaghetti doesn't stick into large clumps that don't cook all the way through.
- Running cold water in your sink helps cool the boiling water before going down the drain to help protect your plumbing.
